The Pocono Raceway has to be one of the trickiest tracks for drivers and teams to get a grip on. There are three turns, each of which is very much unique in banking and radius. Also, there are three straights, each of which with its own length.
With that said, it is advisable to look for drivers and teams who have already had success here when attempting to pick a winner.
So, my pick to win this week’s Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500 is Denny Hamlin. Right from the start, Hamlin has shown an aptitude for getting around this track. He claimed his first two wins on the Sprint Cup Series at Pocono in his rookie season.
Yesterday, I posted a piece that showed this track to be one of the worst for Hamlin’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Kyle Busch. Just the opposite is true for Hamlin. He has claimed a total of three wins here and has an average finish position of 9.5, which makes this one of his best courses.
More than just the fact that Hamlin has had previous success at Pocono is that he is having one of the best seasons of his career having already claimed three checkered flags. He and his team know they can win.
Joining Hamlin in the top-5 will be Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex and Jimmie Johnson.
Look for Joey Logano and David Reutimann as dark horse picks this week.
