Media Day Notes: Junior’s confident, Johnson still has goals and a reason to root for Kurt Busch

By admin | February 10, 2011

By Richard Allen

I was unable to attend the Daytona 500 Media Day but thanks to coverage provided by ESPNews I was able to collect a few notes and quotes in case you missed watching or keeping up on twitter.

Here they are:

*Dale Earnhardt, Jr. enters the 2011 season with a 93 race losing streak.

*Junior says he has spent a lot of time this off season racing on the internet.

*Junior says he is going into the 2011 season thinking this is the year he will turn things around.

*Junior says he still has that competitive fire and he will prove it this year.

*Junior also said he is really enjoying working with new crew chief Steve Letarte so far.

*When asked what the key to success for the Daytona 500 was A.J. Allmendinger joked not wrecking seems to be a key for doing well.

*Allmendinger says the atmosphere at Richard Petty Motorsports is much better going into this year with new ownership.

*Allmendinger thinks 2011 is the time to step up and contend for the Chase.

*Not surprisingly, Tony Stewart says the Daytona 500 still means a lot to him. Been thinking of it all winter.

*Stewart says the new pavement will make the Daytona 500 a pretty cool race because of the partnering up that will occur. He believes there will be a lot of intrigue in the pairing up of teammates, manufactures, etc. at the end of the race.

*Stewart hopes to have a variety of conditions in practice leading up to the Daytona 500 so he can be prepared for every condition that might occur on race day.

*Stewart thinks his team failed to keep up with changes last year but believes they have had better off season this year.

*Kevin Harvick says his team is quietly confident going into 2011. He said they would let Richard Childress do all the talking, referring to his car owner’s statement that he believed his organization could be the one to knock Jimmie Johnson off his perch.

*Harvick says pit road miscues cost him a lot last year but feels the changes made at end of season last year fixed it.

*Joey Logano says his team did some ‘team building’ in NYC over the winter.

*Logano thinks the confidence he gained at end of last season will go a long way this year.

*Jimmie Johnson says this past year was not necessarily his team’s best work.

*Jimmie Johnson is going into his 10th Sprint Cup season. He has won the title in 5 out of 9 so far. Not a bad percentage.

*Johnson says last year was a reality check in the sense that his team had to come from behind to win.

*Johnson says the crew chief/driver swaps at HMS will benefit the entire organization.

*So what does Jimmie Johnson for setting goals? He says he is aiming at tracks he has not won at so far. Chicago, Michigan, Watkins Glen and Homestead.

*Kurt Busch says he is pumped up with new colors, number and sponsor.

*Kurt Busch says his team returns pretty much intact and they are all pulling in the same direction.

*Kurt Busch says Dodge is offering more help in the engineering dept. for the Penske team.

*Kurt Busch has won a race in 9 consecutive seasons.

*Kurt Busch admits lack of depth in Dodge and Penske camp will force the teams to be more focused.

*On Wednesdays after Kurt Busch wins you can save .22/gallon with a Shell saver card.

*Brian Vickers is obviously looking forward to getting back in the race car.

*Vickers says he wasn’t sure he would ever race again when he had medical problems.

*No easing back in for Vickers. He says he wants a championship this year.

*Despite having a win in the Daytona 500 Ryan Newman has an average finish of 23.9.

*Newman says he thinks his engineering background helps him communicate better with crew in today’s highly technical NASCAR.

*Kasey Kahne says his move was best for everybody. Red Bull wanted him and RPM wanted him to move on.
