Childress’ grandsons to race at Volunteer Speedway

By admin | June 19, 2008

***Note: I didn’t mention all of this in the Volunteer Speedway press release I’ve already sent out, but anytime when a weekly short-track is able to have family members of such a noteworthy person as NASCAR’s Richard Childress, it’s a good deal. Both Austin and Ty Dillon are the “real deals.” Those boys can flat-out wheel a race car. Austin won his first-ever NASCAR Camping World East Series race he entered back earlier this spring, over at Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway. He drives a No. 3 car in NASCAR and it’s also his dirt late model number. Younger brother Ty races a No. 2, his father’s former Busch Series number for RCR. Austin won a Super Late Model race as a 16-year-old last year at Volunteer Speedway. Ty recently won a Fastrak Racing Series event, which was a preliminary race when the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series (televised live on SPEED Channel) raced at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Dirt Track at Memorial Day weekend.

From Richard Childress Racing/Team Dillon Motorsports, it’s been confirmed that 17-year-old Austin Dillon and his younger brother Ty Dillon (Richard Childress’ grandsons), and Ryan Gifford (RCR Diversity Developmental Driver) will be present racing on Saturday, June 21 at Volunteer Speedway. The 19-year-old Gifford is originally from Winchester, Tenn., but he’s now living with the Dillon family in North Carolina. Mike Dillon, father of Austin and Ty, is general manager of Richard Childress Racing, and he’s married to Richard’s daughter.

Austin is currently competing full-time with the NASCAR Camping World East Series, with one victory already to his credit, and he will run in the $2,000-to-win 40 lap Super Late Model feature, with Ty and Ryan competing in the Fastrak Racing Series event.

With all of the out-of-state Fastrak competitors expected along with the local Crate Late Model racers from “The Gap,” plus the strong group of Super Late Model drivers expected from around the East Tennessee region, the racing scheduled for Saturday, June 21 looks like it will be very good.
